Over the years many hypotheses, theories and explanations have been advanced to try to describe and understand the relationship between stress, anxiety and performance in sport. In this article I assess the research and the comments of participants in sport themselves. Stress management techniques in sport typically target somatic, behavioral, and/or cognitive affective symptoms of stress. Somatic responses involve the athlete’s physiological reactions, such as changes in heart rate (HR), respiration (R), sweating, gastrointestinal functioning, muscular tension and control, pupil dilation, urinary system, and salivation.

In this article I assess the research and the comments of participants in sport themselves. In the right amount, stress helps you prepare, focus, and perform at your optimal level. Conversely, too much stress, or bad stress, can cause performance anxiety, which hurts your health and does not allow you to play relaxed, confident, and focused in competition.
